Reduced need for donor blood transfusions with cell saving suction

8 June 2022

Dr Nuria Comas with research poster

Surgical Resident Dr Núria Comas recently presented her poster at the European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (EVECC) Congress 2022 in Ghent, Belgium.

Impact of a cell saver machine on blood transfusions to dogs undergoing surgery at a referral veterinary hospital.

The cell saver machine at AURA Veterinary is used during surgeries where there is a risk of major blood loss. Cell salvage allows any of the patient’s blood that is lost during the surgery to be collected and transfused back to the patient. This removes the need for donor blood and subsequently avoids the risk of rejection of the foreign blood by the patient.

Nuria’s research found that since the introduction of the cell saver machine, the need for blood transfusions from Pet Blood Bank has reduced.
